My Father, Charles Gray Massey, was born in 1903 and was 48
when he died. Both Charlie and his brother Bill served in the
Coast Guard. A previous Charles A. Massey had been a Surfman in
1902, before the Coast Guard was created. Ocean City has a
museum documenting the early days of the Surfmen.

When I was small, Charlie was stationed at Lewis Delaware. He
would be away for days. Most of his time then was on boats.
Hasty said in his early years Charlie would be stationed at a
light house on Assateague Island. During Prohibition they would
patrol the beaches to prevent bootleggers from delivering across
the beach from the ocean.
