Sam generally traveled with an entourage of friends. He was generous and if he needed caps for his pistol he would buy his friends some too. It was a small-town version of a biker gang, except the bikes were Schwin and the hair was crew cut.

In the summer his friends would come over and we would play Monopoly and Sorry. When Mom would come home she would raise hell about the mess.

When we were younger we would spend much of the summer at the farm with Grandmother Jackson. We slept in my Mother's room in a white enameled iron bed with a non-working Philco radio on the table beside. Aleafy would make sure she bought sticky buns from the Bond Bread man who came by twice a week. We would also eat watermelon from the garden on the back porch and watch Alefy shell beans or churn butter there.
