Social life in small towns is driven by organizations; Boy
Scouts, Lions Club, American Legion, Churches, etc. I was in
the Scouts from age 10 to 18. Also, Demolay and the High School
Band. In the summer I earned a few dollars mowing lawns for
neighbors and had an after-school paper route.

In the country tennis courts are uncommon. Men and boys fill
idle hours with hunting and fishing. School attendance was
always light on the first day of deer season as fathers took
sons and a few daughters out to get a deer. I spent many
Saturday afternoons shooting cans and sparrows with friends or
kicking the bushes for rabbits.
