We lived in Berlin, Maryland on Williams Street. Until I was five we lived in a two-bedroom rental near what is now Route 346. Next door, was an identical house where the Bakers lived. Bonnie Baker was my age and we played together. Their house was identical to ours. A few houses further, was a Laundromat where Mom did her laundry. At the intersection of Williams Street and Route 346 was Norman Aydelotte's two-bay Esso station. My father would walk over, buy me a Coca-Cola and chat with Norman. Norman's wife was there occasionally to pump gas and chat with customers. Norman worked on cars and talked sports and horse racing with the customers. In the same direction, about where Route 113 is now, was a small grocery. When we walked over, I would get Animal Crackers, a big treat. Often, Mom would have groceries delivered since she didn't drive. In 1950 we moved to a newly built house at 330 Williams Street. It was closer to town, had a big lot and three bedrooms. My father died in January and we moved into the new house later that spring. Sam had his first birthday in June and I started school that Fall. We lived there until Mom died in 1968. Buckingham Elementary was probably two miles away. There was no bus service for townies so I walked, roller- skated and biked to school until completing sixth grade. I had to go through town to get to school so I could stop at the dentist on the way home or stop for candy. My Aunt Mary worked in a clothing store and sometimes I stopped there. Stephen Decatur High was built out on the new Route 50 to Ocean City. I was too far to walk and most took the school bus. I graduated in 1967 and went to U. of Md. at College Park. The house was sold the summer of 1968.
